Indonesia is known to manifest various traditional textiles which cannot be compared with others. Sumatra Island is located in the far west of Indonesia. Because of this geographical location, it has been the place for the acceptance of cultures and religions from outside and has formed advanced cultures since ancient times. Based on such a cultural background, diversified techniques for producing textiles were born in Sumatra Island. It has the aspect of being the "microcosm of Indonesian textiles."
This comprehensive catalouge with explanations is for the “Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery - Diversity in Sumatran Textiles from the Eiko Kusuma Collection ” exhibition which was held as a continuation of the "Indonesian Batik" Exhibition of 1996. This catalogue explores 118 superb works of ikat, embroidery, batik and tie-dyeing and others that were carefully selected from the collection of Mrs. Eiko Adnan Kusuma of Jakarta who is known throughout the world as an Indonesian textile collector.
