Venduehuis The Hague: Indonesian Art Sale. 8 & 9 September 2021
Auction catalogue of the Indonesian Art Sale exclusively showcases numerous fascinating Indonesian art works. A few highlights in this auction are an enamel billboard by Johann von Stein, featuring his most famous design: the S.S. Baloeran of the Rotterdamsche Lloyd, the ship that sailed together with sister ship the S.S. Dempo, both named after volcanoes on Java, from Rotterdam to Java and Sumatra (lot 103). This impressive Art Deco design can compete with the best work of A.M. Cassandre. Three works by Arie Smit, among which a large work dated 1957 with cubist influences, but also the work from 1985 that was once presented to Prince Bernard. Two years ago, the refined artwork of the Balinese dancer Ni Sadri by W.G. Hofker was the highlight of the exhibition 'Indisch paleť in the Westfries Museum in Hoorn. The famous Belgian artist Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès is represented by a large pastel of his equally famous muse, the Balinese Ni Pollok, sitting at the balustrade near the pond in the garden of their house in Sanur. The intriguing portrait of 'Aunt Sun' by Sindudarsono Sudjojono is completely different in style. Adding luster to this lustrous auction of Indonesian art are the following artists: G.P. Adolfs, Affandi, R. Bonnet, Lee Man Fong, Srihadi Soedarsono, Sukada, Basoeki Abdullah, Han Snel, Mokoh, Dullah and R. Strasser. Furthermore, there are also a small collection of more recent paintings by renowned artists such as Krijono, Bramasto, Gunarsa and Wianta. Together with paintings and drawings, there are special batiks; the so-called 'Batik Belanda' (e.g. lots 702-720 and 728) ethnographic art, Djocja silver, Balinese sculptures (e.g. Rodja, lot 109).
