Venduehuis The Hague: Indonesian Art Sale. 18 & 19 November 2020
Auction catalogue of the Indonesian Art Sale exclusively showcases numerous fascinating Indonesian art works. For example, there is the 'Devi Sita' by Bonnet, a truly moving pastel drawing of this pensive and graceful queen. A completely different look is that of the work of Lee Man Fong, 'Street life, Java'. This everyday scene depicting life just before the Japanese capitulation, is a seldom seen subject in artwork of the time where the Javanese apparently went about their business as usual. This whilst Lee Man Fong himself was interned by the Japanese. This work, by research, was found through the catalogue of his first exhibition after the war in Batavia/Jakarta of June 1946. Or have a look at the intimate Chinese-Indonesian interior of Ernst Agerbeek, an artist and resistance fighter who died an early death by the Japanese occupation. This work sensitively shows the rituals of the depicted Chinese man with great respect. Further the two works by Roland Strasser deserve to be named. Both this artist and his good friend Willem Dooijewaard were both for many years inspired by the same models. Strasser's Balinese dancer was also painted by Dooijewaard and conversely the fruit vendor of Dooijewaard was painted by Strasser. There are also two 'Keukenhof landscapes by Srihadi Soedarsono. The works from 1978 were made in Bandung following a stay of a few months in the Netherlands during the period 1976-1978. Srihadi took lessons among others with Ries Mulder, the famous teacher at the Academy of Bandung and later at the Academy in Ohio where he was influenced by Rothko. In these 'horizon explorations' Srihadi searches for the essence of the landscape. Also interesting is the collection 'Batuan' paintings from the legacy of Joop Steenbeek, one of the founders of the 'Rudolf Bonnet Foundation'. Special attention for the three sculptures of one of the greatest Balinese woodcarvers, Ida Bagus Nyana. The beautiful Le Mayeur drawing comes from the same source. A very special acquisition is the discovery of a Lempad drawing, the great idiosyncratic artist with his own entirely unique Balinese style. Finally there are also a number of antique tortoises with silver sirih boxes, some beautiful Ikats including several spectacular ethnographic sculptures, in particular the Geelvinkbaai Korwar.
