The Islands of Cotton: Textiles in Indonesia - The Eiko Kusuma Collection
Indonesian textiles is not only delicate batik and silk ikat but also textile with dinamic motifs woven by cotton threads from east island such as Sumba island, Flores Island, Timor Island, Sulawesi Island, and Kalimantan Island. Eiko Adnan Kusuma has been known as an “Indonesian Textiles” collector worldwide. The Fukuoka Art Museum has held an “ Indonesian Batik” exhibition in 1996, and an “ Weaving, Dyeing and Embroidery- Diversity in Sumatra Textiles “ exhibition in 1999 and they were well received. This third exhibition marks the completion of introducing the “Indonesian Textiles” which Ms. Kusuma has been collecting for a long time. Approximately 70 works of textiles including three works from the Democratic Republic of East Timur along with raw cotton and hand spun cotton were exhibited. This comprehensive catalouge with explanations is for the “The Islands of Cotton: Textiles in Indonesia from The Eiko Kusuma Collection” which were held at the Fukuoka Art Museum and The Shoto Museum of Art.
