Srihadi Soedarsono: Path of the Soul, superbly written by Jean Couteau, offers more than just a detailed retrospective on the life and work of Indonesian painter Srihadi Soedarsono. Because the life of this painter parallels the history of modern Indonesia from his coming of age during the Indonesian revolution, to his studies in the 1950s, during Indonesia's transformative years, to his maturity as an artist during the years of the New Order regime (1965-1998) - the history of this artist's life and works can be seen as a microcosm of the many social, political, and artistic trends that have affected the development of Indonesian culture since the time of Indonesian independence. This, more than anything else, is what makes Path of the Soul such an important and historic work. This book is presented in two volumes. The first volume, the "Retrospective," concentrates on the life of the artist and his artistic development. With very few exceptions, all of the paintings and drawings by Srihadi that appear in this volume are referred to in the author's text. The second volume, the "Gallery," presents additional paintings that the artist created over the years, to further illustrate the topics of discussion in the text. Thus, the order of the paintings follows the topics discussed by the author in the first volume-Social and Political Works, Cosmic Works, Figures, and Other Works.
