Spoorwegstations op Java
Spoorwegstations op Java
In 1867, the first railway line was built on Java between Semarang and Tangoeng. The oldest railway stations in the former Dutch East Indies, designed and built by the Dutch, were monuments of simplicity and austerity. Later, more impressive stations were built, such as that of Jakarta. The early stations of Java, in contrast to their Dutch counterparts, have generally not yet fallen prey to demolition rage and modernization drive and therefore give a good impression of Dutch station architecture from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Although the Dutch influence on station construction extends beyond the transfer of sovereignty, the book broadly covers up to 1942, the year of the Japanese invasion. The author visited stations in all corners of Java to describe their architectural style and capture their atmosphere. We follow the railway lines of the largest and oldest companies, the Staatsspoorwegen (SS) and the Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorwegmaatschappij (NIS). In addition, two former steam tram companies are also receiving attention: the Semarang-Joana Stoomtram Maatschappij (SJS) and the Samarang-Cheribon Stoomtram Maatschappij (SCS).The stations are central to the story, however, this book also explores fascinating railway and urban history of Java.
