Indonesian textiles are as diverse as the 13,000 islands that make up the world's largest archipelago, located in Southeast Asia. Not only does each island hold a different variation of decorative cloth, each Indonesian village seems to specialize in some decorative form to identify it from its neighbor. The Indonesian words batik and ikat have entered global lexicon to describe textile decorative processes, and Indonesian textiles have long been recognized on the world's international art market as superb examples of textile art of great quality. This book explores in more depth the artistic significance of various textiles from the authors' collection. In seven chapters, it provides an overview of the various styles, designs, and decorative techniques of Indonesian textiles and gives practical suggestions for textile collectors on how to care for, value, and use their textiles in the home. Price ranges that would be reasonable in a gallery are included for the textiles, taking into account the condition, material, aesthetic quality, and rarity of each textile. Chapters are devoted to batik (wax-resist decorative dyed cloths), ikat (bind-resist dyed and woven textiles), as well as decoratively woven textile forms from stripes to tapestry and decoratively embellished textiles with beadwork and embroidery. The Indonesian and technical terms are further explained in an extensive glossary. Over 200 color photographs highlight the wealth and beauty of these textiles as works of art. Textile designers will be inspired by the traditional and modern interpretations of design forms and symbols. In fact, the "exquisite diversity" of the textiles in this book will excite the eye of all who behold them!
