Sotheby’s Singapore: South East Asian Paintings. Sunday 3 October 1999
Auction catalogue Sotheby’s Singapore October 3 1999 consists of 162 lots illustrated in color and all described in detail.
The highlight of Sotheby’s Singapore final sale of the 20th century is a spectacular and rare 19th century painting. "Lying in Wait" (lot 28) an important work by the great Indonesian painter, Raden Saleh, will appeal to South East Asian painting connoisseurs and historians. Its compositional and technical bravura, size and condition make it a truly wonderful cover lot to close the millenium with, for this field of collecting.
The mystique of Balinese life and culture has fascinated artists and globetrotters since the 1930's, from Miguel Covarrubias to Margaret Mead, Adrien Jean le Mayeur to Walter Spies. "Bali-Life" (lot 65 by Lee Man Fong, a very popular Singaporean/Indonesian painter) a visual ideal and a fantasy of Balinese life, is but one of a strong group of works by modern Indonesian painters, including works by Hendra Gunawan and S. Sudjojono.
Whilst we pay hommage to the past, the future lies in part with the new generation of South East Asian artists. A section of works by Indonesian New Contemporary is also included. Rounding off the sale of paintings from Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia is a charming group of Vietnamese paintings by Mai Thu, Phan Chanh and Le Pho, favourite artists amongst collectors in South East Asia for their delicate interpretations on silk.
