Selected Works of Ninety-Nine Artists Who Depicted Indonesia
Selected Works of Ninety-Nine Artists Who Depicted Indonesia
This richly illustrated book provides the reader with a comprehensive guide to some of the works of art created by Indonesian and foreign-born artists who reside in or have lived or visited the archipelago from the middle of the 19th century up to the present day. Selecting works of art that truly represented each artist was a challenging task and done on the basis of showing typical or outstanding examples. A broad range of pieces in different media and styles ranging from oil, watercolor to drawing have been chosen here in order to show an immense range of styles and techniques as possible.
Art appreciation is by its very nature rather compromising and subjective. Limiting the number of artists to ninety-nine in this volume also was a quite difficult endeavor. The choices were made to include the widest range of works possible and also were guided by personal taste and preferences. The essential biographical data provided for each artist is concise and informative at the same time, providing key information about the person in order to give more understanding of the works. In addition to offering useful reference information about the artists, it is hoped that this will excite and inspire reactions to their art.
In this book the artists are presented in chronological order from older to younger in order to show the developments of different styles, periods, techniques and influences in their contemporary art. It is hoped that this can lead to interesting comparisons between the artists and their works. A select bibliography makes “Selected Works of Ninety-Nine Artists Who Depicted Indonesia” a valuable reference work.
