S.Sudjojono is one of the most important and influential figure in the history of Indonesian Art, especially in the early 20 century. One of S. Sudjojono's notable contributions to Indonesian Art was his passion and endeavour in building and shaping art illustrative to Indonesian soul and characters. The execution took form through his art works, ideas and writings, but also through active involvement in the first Indonesian arts organizations.

This book was published in conjunction with the  exhibition “S. Sudjojono: Art, Life, and Legacy" as part of a grand celebration of Seabad S. Sudjojono in 2013.

This exhibition presents the multifaceted Sudjojono: as an artist, critic, thinker, writer, politician, organizer, teacher and also, an individual, with all his perfections and imperfections, through examinations of his works, writings, as well as his memorabilia. This exhibition showcases approximately about 40 paintings, 50 sketches, a selection of personal photos, and a number of archives (writings, personal letters, audio, video, and so on), along with a collection of memorabilia, such as, his favourite tobacco pipe down to his painting equipments. Most of these items are made public for the very first time on loan from the collections of several public institutions, private collectors, and S. Sudjojono Centre. This exhibition is divided by different thematic sections where each section focuses on the figure of Sudjojono examined through his oeuvre from different period. These sections altogether function as 'highlight' to shed light on the dynamics of his art, life, and legacy that he left behind.

The richly illustrated book examines the compilation of S. Sudjojono's best works in details from several different approaches artistically, art and historical, and so on. Through this approach, this book is a valuable additional to the literature helping to deepen the understanding of the S. Sudjojono's works.
