Power Dressing: Textiles for Rulers and Priests from the Chris Hall Collection
Power Dressing: Textiles for Rulers and Priests from the Chris Hall Collection
Regarded as a gift from Heaven, the wearing of silk became associated with the definition of rank and social status in traditional Chinese society, as well as reflecting seasonal changes and marking various points in the ritual calendar or stages in an individual's lifecycle. As the first founding rulers of China made their public appearances in a very specific two-part attire, rules for garments and clothing also became an expression of political power and authority. As a manifestation of power, the ascendancy of every new dynasty or ruler resulted in the meticulous specification of dress codes for all people under heaven.
This publication revolves around the 152-strong collection of Chinese textiles by Chris Hall. A resident of Hong Kong since 1978, Hall's wonderful journey of textile collecting began with the purchase of a Chinese robe at auction. Twenty-seven years later, this is one of the largest private collections of Chinese textiles in the world. Hall's single-minded aesthetic sense has led him to discover unique pieces, some of which are critically important as comparisons with examples found in leading museums around the world.
