Regularly stayed in Bali, Paul Husner has discovered and painted several parts of Bali, from fishing villages in the east to the rice fields near Iseh, where the German artist Walter Spies lived before the war, and later the Swiss artist Theo Meier, the mountain areas of Batur and Batu Karu, with their ancient temples; the rice fields of Antosari and wild ocean on the western coast in Tabanan; and hidden locations with banyan trees from the area around Ubud to Sanur in the south. He has joined many ceremonies, and enjoyed many drama and gamelan music performances together with his wife, anthropologist Tine G. Ruiter, who shares his deep respect for and interest in Balinese culture.

This book shows the results of his painting series - Sanur and Beyond: Seaside Encounters between Nature and Men. As noted in the text of the book, the paintings are focused mainly on the power of nature - sea, mountain, trees and the ways that humans smoothly interact with it.

Central to the paintings Balinese holy mountain, Gunung Agung, and the sea, often visible together, and expressing two different kinds of energy. For a Balinese, they are of primary importance, and there is a ritual symbolism attached to thern as the homes of the Gods and of negative forces, respectively. Through these paintings, Paul Husner has truly managed to express the soul of Bali. Written by renown writer Dr. Jean Couteau, this publication is a significant contribution to the art world, as well as to a deeper understanding of Bali and its people.
