This richly illustrated publication explores the global journey of Indian trade textiles between the fifteenth and nineteenth centuries, a period when India was renowned as the world’s textile hub. Patterns of Trade features over 150 vividly coloured and intricately patterned pieces produced in India for export to regions as diverse as Japan, Southeast Asia, the Islamic world, and Europe. These textiles are not only stunning artistic achievements but also material witnesses to centuries of global commerce and cultural exchange.
The book accompanies the special exhibition held at the Asian Civilisations Museum from 15 November 2011 to 3 June 2012, which showcased 70 of the textiles featured here. Essays by leading scholars shed light on the historical context, production techniques, and international appeal of these fabrics, offering a deeper appreciation of their craftsmanship and enduring legacy.
