This 19th-century ceramic wash bowl, known in Indonesia as Patiman, is a beautiful example of Batavian ware—porcelain produced in Jingdezhen, China and exported throughout Southeast Asia. Pieces like this were especially appreciated in Indonesian Peranakan Chinese community, where they served both ceremonial and everyday functions.
The bowl features a finely painted cobalt blue underglaze interior with swirling goldfish motif—symbols traditionally associated with abundance and vitality. The exterior and rim are finished in a rich, chocolate-brown café-au-lait glaze, a signature element of Batavian porcelain that creates a striking contrast with the blue-and-white interior. This distinctive glaze style, combined with the artistic motifs, makes the piece both culturally significant and visually captivating.
