Balinese painter Nyoman Gunarsa's generously illustrated retrospective traces his origins from a village boy growing up in the shadow of an open palace, profoundly influenced by its three hundred year old classic paintings. Propelled by a furious energy to paint, he embraced the traditions of his beloved Bali which he skillfully communicated as a contemporary artist to a world audience, becoming one of Asia's most reknowned artists.

Stunning color plates of oils, watercolors and pastels, selected from his enormous body of works are all the more incredible when considering other achievements; master carver, classical Balinese dancer, dedicated teacher of the arts, loving caretaker of his culture; and most recently founder of two major museums.

This book presents the artist's works as a dance mixing time and subjects from roughly three ten year periods: “Offerings", "Heroes" and the "Power of the Woman". Synthesizing previous periods into the next, Nyoman faces his greatest challenge, as he explores with passion, paint and canvas man's spiritual core.
