Indonesia is constituted by hundreds of tribes and each tribe shows distinctive character of Art. The art created by each tribe is inspired by the local visual 'vocabularies'. Indonesia is one of the very small number of nations existing-not to say the only nation-that is blessed with such a rich diversity. - For that reason, the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy considers that it is urgent to record those potentials in a documentation book. This book, Maestro Seni Rupa Modern Indonesia, was written and published based on that view. The question is: Why should visual art? It is because visual art is the art form that has contributed very significantly in the development of Indonesian culture. Even, in addition to its major function as the 'vitamin' of human soul, visual art also play a crucial part in the growth of the creative economy. Because visual art covers a vast area, the first book published is focused on the Maestros of modern visual art that consists of painting, graphic, sculpture, and creative ceramic art. The word 'modern' is used merely to limit the historical aspect. It is very possible that in the future, other visual art books or even other book discussing other art forms will be published.
