This beautifully designed book on Balinese artist, Made Wianta, provides a superb overview of 120 works dating from 1978 to 1999.

Batik, dance, gamelan music, drawing, painting, writing and installation work have all played an important part in Wianta's artistic career. Although Wianta studied traditional Balinese painting, his fascination with modern and Western art prompted him to go to Belgium in 1975. There he was exposed for the first time to the rich variety of European art styles. Upon his return to Bali in 1977, Made Wianta restlessly sketched and painted a whole range of different creative forms. Throughout the years, he became well known for his remarkable black and white drawings, depicting surreal images of his Balinese dreams.

Gradually he discovered colour and created various geometric forms, conveying emotions and a deep sense of spirituality. Influenced by Japanese brush painting, Wianta infused his calligraphy works with signs and symbols expressing his relationship to the forces of nature. His intuitive reactions to the phenomena of the world around him are reflected in diverse installation works.

Made Wianta's ability to create a unique visual vocabulary in his own Balinese and modern way has allowed viewers from all over the world to share his universal language and abstract form - they can see his works in terms of their own experience, intuitively recognizing some parts of themselves.
