Kichigoro Mori, sometimes better known by art collectors as Mori Kinsen or K. Mori, belongs to the group of Japanese artists who, early in the twentieth century, left Japan to paint abroad. Born in Yokohama in 1888, he landed in Indonesia in 1917. He married a young Javanese lady in 1920 and spent almost all his life painting in Java until his death in 1954.

When Kichigoro left his motherland, the most well-established influence of Western art in Japan was the "School of Barbizon" style. A faithful follower of this French concept, Kichigoro's pictures reflected a solemn spirit blended with a mood of tropical poetry. In several of his works, rapid brush strokes painted in vivid shades of green, anticipated the style of the early Impressionists. Essentially a landscape painter, in the majority of his works the sky and the earth are linked to create a celestial emotion in which Kichigoro confirmed his attachment to the magnificence of Javanese atmospheres.
