Javanese Batik
Javanese Batik
The time-honored batik art, originally developed in Indonesia, was first brought to Japan in the late 16th century with the opening of trade between this country and Southeast Asia. The Japanese people of those days must have been thoroughly fascinated by the exuberant colors created from the madder, indigo, and dark brown dyes, the bold patterns of animals and plants unknown in Japan as well as the geometric patterns brimming with the intoxicating flavor of strange cultures.
This publication is the catalogue to the exhibition "Javanese Batik" shown at Suntory Museum of Art, Tokyo from May 12 through June 28, 1987. This exhibition gives the audience a unique chance to rediscover the traditional beauty of Indonesian batik. It brings together the finest works from the celebrated collection, built up over some four decades of Mrs. Eiko Adnan Kusuma.
