Java Chintz Exhibition
Java Chintz Exhibition
This publication is the catalogue to the exhibition "Java Chintz" shown at Kobe City Museum in 1988. This Special Exhibition, putting its focus on the art of Javanese Batik which has characteristically been developed in Java, Indonesia, intends to rediscover the traditional beauty of the Batik and, further, to explore part of the multifaceted culture of the country of Indonesia. The brilliant colors and unique patterns with full of exoticism on the cotton cloth dyed in batik technique have been fascinating a great many people since old times. Especially, the patterns of Java Batik, the number of varieties of which is estimated at as many as three or five thousand, reflect realistically the "multifariousness" of the land of Indonesia, located at the point of contact between East and West Cultures and consequently having been influenced by various cultural spheres in the both worlds. In this Exhibition, a hundred and seven excellent pieces specially selected from Mrs. Eiko Adnan Kusuma's Java Batik Collection are exhibited.
