Indonesian Batik has created its own unique world because of its delicate technique and colorful patterns, and along with Indian Batik, it is a world-leading dyeing technique. In Japan, it has been cherished as Java Batik from ancient time and has a long history of being used in costumes, the matting of calligraphic paintings and tea ceremony accessories. Japanese Batik was adopted at the time when Java island was governed by Japan. Java Batik patterns were adopted into the Yuzen design. Hence it has been associated greatly with the dyeing and weaving culture of Japan.
This comprehensive catalogue is for the Indonesian Batik From Eiko Adnan Kusuma Collection Exhibition which was held at the Fukuoka Art Museum. This exhibition genealogically introduces colorful Java Batik with the full cooperation of Eiko Adnan Kusuma whose collection is known to be the most genealogized. There are approximately 150 superb pieces chosen out of several thousand. This catalogue will create an opportunity for the readers to be touched by the real aspects of various Batik which has spread through out the vast islands.
