Unknown Indian Chintz: Discoveries in the South Sea Islands of Indonesia / Shira rezaru Indo Sarasa Nankai no shimajima Indoneshia ni okeru hakken
Various patterned fabrics known as chintz have been popular in many parts of the world. Among these chintz, Indian chintz is especially famous. However little is known about what the original Indian chintz was like. In recent years, Indian chintz, which is thought to have been exported after the Age of Exploration, has been discovered one after another on the Indonesian islands, which are linked to the vast sea area of Southeast Asia. Many of these designs are often found in Indian chintz which were exported to Japan, Europe and Egypt. However, there are also designs that are hardly known until now. Only very few Indian Chintz with these unknown designs are found. Most of them are uncut and have been used to this day without much loss of their original shape.
Published to coincide with the exhibition “Unknown Indian Chintz: Discoveries in the South Sea Islands of Indonesia”, this lavishly illustrated catalog explores superb works of Indian chintz which were carefully selected from the Okada Collection, Nishimura Collection, Konjaku Nishimura Collection, Yu Oda Collection, and the National Museum of Ethnology Collection.
