This catalogue is published on the occasion of the retrospective exhibition of the French artist: Gabrielle Ferrand.
Gabrielle Ferrand was born in the city of Bordeaux on August 12, 1887. Gabrielle was a female painter and also the first French painter to visit the islands of Java and Bali and lived in the Dutch East Indies from 1922 to 1925.
Her adventurous spirit has been visible since her youth. Gabrielle has a dream of going on an adventure to the tropics. For her, the tropics have a very strong attraction. Gabrielle dreams of painting in tropical nature that is rich in sunlight and swaying coconut trees.
Gabrielle's dream came true when she was 35 years old, in 1922, when she boarded a Dutch merchant ship from Marseilles, she headed to the island of Java and on the ship, Gabrielle was the only French woman on board.
Gabrielle only speaks a little Dutch and is also learning Malay as a necessary preparation for communicating with the local population.
Gabrielle wrote in her notes about the nature of the island of Java, which she had long dreamed of, "The sunlight shines like gold, the song of waving coconut palms excite the happiness of nature, and the blue sea water reflects infinite beauty." During her two years of wandering on the island of Java, Gabrielle Ferrand was often greeted by important people. such as Sultans and governors as well as local residents. Gabrielle was also impressed by the theater performance at the residence of the Sultan of Yogyakarta, where the story theme of the performance was taken from the stories of the Mahabrata and Ramayana.
While on the island of Java, Gabrielle always recorded her travels with her pencil and brush as well as through the photos she made. Gabrielle captured the character and daily life of the local people, innocent faces with brownish skin, bare-chested girls, villages that looked foreign and interesting to her, rice fields with mountain backdrops and huts that had their own charm in Gabrielle's eyes.
Gabrielle really likes dancing in Java, the experiences that Gabrielle has gone through have paid off with what she has dreamed of. In her paintings, Gabrielle uses many soft color combinations and the techniques used in oil and watercolor media are very varied, sometimes Gabrielle uses the Pointillism technique to draw the shadow of the moon.
In those days, not many French women had the courage to decide to go to a distant area that not many people knew about and Gabrielle had done it. With care and precision, he immortalized it in works of art that are full of charm.
In 1925, before returning to Europe, Gabrielle held an exhibition of work from her travels in Batavia (Jakarta). In the same year he held an exhibition at the Reitlinger Gallery in France.
In 1978 Gabrielle Ferrand received a silver medal from the Academie Francaise in honor of her work in the world of art. On February 19, 1984 Gabrielle Ferrand died in the Swiss city of Glion. Gabrielle Ferrand has introduced the Dutch East Indies through her works, conferences and articles she has written in addition to her exhibitions.
