From the Family Album: Portraits from the Lee Brothers Studio, Singapore, 1910-1925
The Lee Brothers Collection is the largest single collection of photographic portraits in the Singapore National Archives. Comprising some 2,500 images of people of all races: shy girls, handsome men, formidable matriachs preciding over large families, cherubic children and beguiling wedding couples, these photographs show the talent of Lee King Yan and Lee Poh Yan. The brothers, members of an extended family who operated photographic studios throughout the region, achieved both subtlety and naturalness in their portraiture. Their genius lay in their ability to combine dispassionate technical skill with a finely developed understanding of human character and expression. The result is a valuable and sensitive portfolio, a lasting record of the people of Singapore between the years 1910 and 1925.
