The From Mooi Indië to Persagi exhibition is organized to research a stage of the development of Indonesian art surrounding the establishment of the Association of Indonesian Painters, or Persagi, through the collections of the University Museum Pelita Harapan and the Jakarta Fine Arts Museum.
This exhibition provided answers to some questions in the history of Indonesia art which previously have not been afforded a definitive answer. Who instigated the term "Mooi Indie"? When was Persagi established, and who were its committee members? What are the differences between the aesthetic approaches of the "Beautiful Indies" and the Persagi artists? Although Sudjojono clearly rejected the aesthetics of the Beautiful Indies, did he also admire the works of some its artists? Is it true that some Persagi artists also depicted the Beautiful Indies" "trinity"?
This exhibition catalog accompanies the From Mooi Indië to Persagi exhibition by offering several essays by some scholars of Indonesian, both from Indonesia and from other parts of the world. The essays are hoped to broaden the horizons of their readers and instigate new ideas which will provide a more in-depth and broader scholarship about the period surrounding the birth of Persagi.
