F.J.L. Ghijsels, The Quiet Collector gives a rare and intimate glimpse into the lives of a handful of talented and passionate colonial architects including P.A.J. Moojen, Wolff Schoemaker, Henri Pont Maclaine and Thomas Karsten who together with Ghijsels introduced Indonesia to modern architecture, design and city planning during the early 20th century, leaving a legacy of iconic buildings that continue to inspire Indonesian architecture. These men, together with their Javanese peers, also played an important role in the recognition and preservation of Indonesian art and culture at a critical time in history. Most of them were also avid collectors who founded and gave support to seminal institutions like the Art Circle (Kunstkring), Java Institute and museums in Trowulan, Surabaya and Bali. The gallery of the book illustrates artwork from the little-known collection of Ghijsels, largely assembled between 1910 and 1928. Authored by respected scholars and Indonesian art experts, Arnold Wentholt of Leiden, and Bruce W. Carpenter, the book expertly documents the lives and legacies of Ghijsels and his circle of friends before their world came to an end with the outbreak of World War Two.
