De Indische Israëls
De Indische Israëls
Isaac Israëls, the greatest Dutch impressionist painter, was a painter of people and cities. Isaac, the travel enthusiast, always visited Amsterdam, The Hague, Paris, London, Florence and all those other cities in search of the pictorially interesting, the exotic. He had a great predilection for cabarets, circuses, fairs, revues and theater. It is therefore not surprising that in 1898 and 1916, when dancers and musicians from the then Dutch East Indies performed in The Hague, he painted them many times in their beautiful costumes.
Partly as a result of this, Israels visited 'our Indies' in 1922 and painted in Batavia, Bali and especially at the royal courts in Solo (Surakarta).
The book De Indische Israëls discusses his life, the art life in Batavia around 1920 and especially the 'Indische ' period of the artist: the constant love affair with the land, the people and Israel's struggle with the tropical light and search for the real Indies.
