Auction catalogue of the Indonesian Art Sale exclusively showcases numerous fascinating Indonesian art works. A few highlights in this auction is the collection of the Rudolf Bonnet Foundation. Selling the collection will financially enable the Foundation to give this support in activities such as, concretely, the restoration of Museum Puri Lukisan and buildings. All works by Rudolf Bonnet originated from the estate of Mrs. G. Perdick Bonnet, July 1983, with the exception of "Portrait 1950 (lot 57). Further, two works by Hendrik Paulides deserve to be named. Although he did not settle in the Dutch East Indies for a long period of time his two journeys in 1922 and 1929 left a lasting impression on him. Unlike other Orientalists who depicted primarily the visual beauty of the East Indies and its inhabitans, Paulides was able to also reflect the spirit of the people. He intertwined the physical radiance of dancers, fruit sellers or oarsmen with their spiritual, religious and mythological background. He had an intense fascination for the lives and beliefs of the people of the East Indies. Both works are documented in the book “Hendrik Paulides: Schilder en verteller, Pelukis dan dalang, Painter and narrator [1892-1967]”. Also interesting are the Affandi works from the Collection of Joseph Borkin. He cultivated a relationship with President Sukarno in his capacity as an economic advisor and consultant to the President during the early years of Indonesia's emergence as a nation. The first meeting with Affandi left such an indelible impression on the collector that upon his return to the United States Joseph Borkin excitedly declared to his family, "I have just met the world's next Van Gogh". Joseph Borkin was convinced that Affandi possessed a unique talent and was the bridge that connected the best of eastern and western art. There are also beautiful paintings by renowned artists such as G.P. Adolfs, R. Bonnet, Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès, Theo Meier, Han Snel, Srihadi Sudarsono, Arie Smit and Lee Man Fong. Finally lithographs and prints by Willem G. Hofker complete the auction.
