A selection of Smend's considerable collection of Indonesian batiks dated from the period between 1880 and 1930 is depicted in 71 good quality color plates. The catalogue, which is directed mainly at an audience of collectors, contains informal essays on Smend and collecting and a short essay on the batiks of Java. Many black and white historical photos are included of Indonesians wearing these remarkable fabrics.
