Basoeki Abdullah: Painter of Kings
Basoeki Abdullah (1915-1993) was a popular painter in Southeast Asia during the 20th century. Born in Surakarta, Central Java, Basoeki studied painting at the Koninlijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Den Haag, the Netherlands. He furthered his knowledge of the arts in Paris and Rome. Basoeki returned to Indonesia in 1942 and became a member of Poetera (People's Power Center). He later lived in Bangkok, Thailand, and served as the palace painter for King Bhumibol Adulyadej dan Queen Sirikit. He was also the painter for Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, Sultan Bolkiah of Brunei Darussalam and King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. President Sukarno was an avid collector of his works. Hunderds of his works grace the various presidential palaces of the nations. The story of Basoeki Abdullah will be of value to art lovers in Indonesia, and everywhere.
