Avant-Garde Design: Dutch Decorative Arts 1880-1940

This spectacularly illustrated book covers the important and innovative period of Dutch Decorative arts 1880-1940 and is the first book in English devoted to the substantial contribution made by the Netherlands to avant-garde design. The finest and most distinctive examples of furniture, glass, pottery, silver and textiles of the period from both public and private collections in Europe and North America are described and illustrated in 150 especially commissioned colour and 75 monochrome illustrations. Four articles by specialists examine the historical context and origins of these objects as well as their styles and design. With the exception of Gerrit Rietveld and H.P. Berlage, the names of many of the Dutch designers of the period are relatively unknown outside The Netherlands, although their work is of the highest quality and relates closely to that produced elsewhere. Dutch Decorative arts of the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods are readily available on the art market throughout Europe and the UK and this book provides a valuable reference work for collectors, dealers and auction houses as well as enthusiasts of the period. The first part of the book comprises chapters on the various schools and movements: the Nieuwe Kunst, the Amsterdam School, de Stijl, The Hague School and Functionalism. The second part contains an extensive and detailed directory of prominent and lesser-known architects, designers, craftsmen, manufacturers and artistic schools and institutes. The book is published to coincide with an exhibition of Dutch Decorative Arts at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.
