Arie Smit
Arie Smit
Dutch-born Indonesian artist Arie Smit, a master of color and composition, has created an immense variety of works with vibrant lives of their own which evoke the rhythms of poetry and the harmonies of music. From grey misty Holland to the brilliant kaleidoscope of the tropics, no other artist has been as inspired by the dynamic culture of Bali. He has lived in dozens of places on the island, showing remarkably diverse images of land, sea, temples, ceremonies, villages, and people in his art.
With the true dedication of an independent artist, Arie broke free from classical Dutch art traditions and ventured into modes of vivid color, simplified forms, and expressive patterns in superb compositions reminiscent of early twentieth century Fauvism. His tantalizing works have an immediate appeal which invite contemplation and exploration. He has a superior gift of sensitivity for showing the essence of his images. His works are deeply spiritual yet subtly sensual at the same time. He is an extremely versatile and productive artist up to the present day.
Arie's diverse and vibrant art is the focus of this dazzling book. Over 190 of some of his finest works from numerous collections are reproduced here in full color. They are arranged chonologically to illustrate his artistic development and maturity while living in Indonesia, especially on the island of Bali for nearly forty years. The stunning photographs portray not only people and places over time, but also the journey of an artistic soul inspired by the colors and deeper dynamics of life in the tropics. Two essays, one on his fascinating life and the other on his expressive art, help to complete the picture of an extraordinary artist.
