This intricately crafted 19th-century silver modesty plate, or caping, originates from South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Shaped like a stylized heart, it features delicate openwork filigree and hand-chased floral patterns framed by a checkered floral border. The craftsmanship reveals the exceptional skill of local silversmiths of the period.
Traditionally worn by aristocratic children of both sexes, this piece was suspended from the waist by cords or chains. More than an item of clothing, it served a protective spiritual function—shielding young children from sorcery and unseen forces in accordance with local belief systems. The back of the plate is plain, with visible signs of age and use, adding to its authenticity and charm.
This is a rare example of ceremonial silverwork from the Bugis or Makassar nobility, and a meaningful addition for collectors of ethnographic or Indonesian antique art.
