This exquisite 19th-century silver box from Sumatra is a rare collector’s piece, handcrafted by a local artisan. Though rectangular in form, its faceted corners give it an elegant octagonal shape. Inspired by 18th-century Dutch tobacco boxes, it is intricately engraved on all sides with lush floral motifs.
Originally used to store shredded tobacco and betel nut, the box features a domed, hinged lid and a beautifully aged patina that reflects its long and respectful use. This is a fine example of colonial-era artistry from the Indonesian archipelago.
