This beautifully matched pair of antique silver pillow ends was crafted in Java around 1900 and reflects the refined wedding traditions of the Peranakan Chinese community. Each piece is intricately repoussé-decorated with symbolic Chinese motifs, including the Qilin, bat, dragon, pomegranate, and flames—all representing good fortune, longevity, and fertility.
These silver ends were traditionally sewn onto the ends of bolster pillows for use on the bridal bed, playing a key role in Peranakan marriage ceremonies. The small perforations around the edges were made specifically for stitching onto fabric. Likely made by a local Chinese silversmith in the Dutch East Indies, this pair represents the artistic and cultural synthesis that defined Peranakan identity.
