This antique tenong was made in Java between the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the Peranakan Chinese community. It was traditionally used across Java to store or transport prepared food, particularly for ceremonial or communal occasions.

A tenong is a type of round lidded basket, typically made from bamboo. It consists of a base and a fitted cover, both reinforced with crossed bamboo slats for strength. The weaving style, materials, and finishing details often reflect the specific region and cultural influences of the time.

This particular tenong features handwoven bamboo throughout. The lid is constructed with a double-layer weave, decorated with a red medallion at the center and red edging along the rim. The base uses a double-layer weave, supported by intersecting bamboo strips underneath. The edges are bound with thin bamboo cord, which is threaded through small, hand-pierced holes—an example of traditional binding methods used in bamboo craftsmanship.
