Amanjiwo: A Journey in Central Java. Sketchbook by the Artist van der Sterren - Limited Edition of 150 copies
Borobudur, the world’s largest Buddhist shrine, was erected in Central Java during the 9th Century. It rises majestically, as if on a pedestal above the surrounding vivid green rice fields, facing the distant hills in the region known as the “garden of Java”. Borobudur has evoked awe and admiration down through the ages, inspiring visitors with its Buddhist philosophies and meditation.
A short distance away lives the artist, John van der Sterren, who selected the beauty and serenity of this area to build a studio and devote himself full-time to artistic pursuits. John has become a familiar sight in the area, wearing his trademark straw hat, as he ceaselessly draws and paints work inspired by the rich and fertile landscape and ancient edifices of Central Java. Local People have became accustomed to his presence and will attest to his white beard and busy brushes, which now seem permanently associated with this region.
Nestled within this rural heartland, the Amanjiwo Hotel becomes yet another aesthetic wonder of Central Java, its classical architecture complimenting the surrounding splendor of Javanese tradition with grace and devotion.
