Alles voor de Kunst: W.O.J. Nieuwenkamp
Wijnand Otto Jan Nieuwenkamp (1874-1950), descendant of an Amsterdam shipowners' family, was extremely versatile in artistic terms. Most admirers know him as a graphic artist and painter, but he was also a gifted architect, shipbuilder, writer, explorer, art collector and ethnographer. He was very productive and bequeathed many thousands of meticulously executed drawings, etchers, woodcuts, lithographs and oil paintings.
Nieuwenkamp gained inspiration for his work during his travels. Before 1897 he traveled to the Netherlands and Europe. In Haarlem he was introduced to the Arts & Crafts Movement, which has been crucial for his own artistic education. In the following years he traveled to Java, Bali, Lombok, Alor and Timor, Egypt, Japan, India and China, often involving years of expeditions. He visited the island of Bali six times on his travels for a long time. There he cycled around with his drawing equipment to capture his impressions (a cycling white artist had not been seen there before) and he collected art objects on behalf of the European ethnological museums. In contrast to the prevailing zeitgeist in the Netherlands, he saw the cultural achievements of the Balinese as high-quality and artistically special.
In 1900 he built his beautiful residential and workshop ship De Zwerver, with which he sailed with his family through the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. In 1905 he settled in Edam, in 1920 he left for Italy, where he initially wandered and in 1926 bought a villa in Fiesole where he lived and worked until his death. Nieuwenkamp wrote dozens of books and articles about his work and his travels. Much has been published about him in recent years, but this is the first book to give a complete overview of his life and work.
