Affandi, Indonesia's best known painter, came into his own as an artist when Indonesians were in the midst of their struggle for independence. Acclaimed by international critics from the 1950s onwards -called "a genius" by John Berger and commended by Herbert Read- Affandi was a towering figure in the Indonesian art world for more than half a century.

Always 'hungry to paint' and mostly self-taught, Affandi discarded brush and palette early on, squeezing the paint directly onto the canvas with the tube, and using his hands and arms. Developing this technique of action painting, pushing towards abstraction, Affandi's work remained a humanistic, representational expressionism.

On the occasion of this important Centennial in modern Indonesian and world art, Sardjana Sumichan and the Bina Lestari Budaya Foundation have, with support from the Singapore Art Museum, spearheaded this major publication with over four hundred quality reproductions. Affandi's work entitled "Three Moods" inspired the division into three volumes.

The chapters, representing new research on Affandi's life and oeuvre, are written by an international team of experts on modern Indonesian art: from Indonesia, Eddy Soetriyono, Bambang Bujono, and Jim Supangkat; from France via Bali, Jean Couteau, and from Canada and the Netherlands, Astri Wright and Helena Spanjaard.
