Peranakan are descendants of Chinese who migrated to Southeast Asia, married local women and settled there. They established a unique culture, forming a network over the borders of Southeast Asian countries. Singapore is one of the major cities, such as Melaka and Penang, Malaysia, of the network. Peranakan women wore jacket called baju and batik colored with delicate designs. Especially, long upper garments in a classic style, called baju panjang, spanning from the 19th to 20th century, underwent a dramatic change as if it were a revolution. Batik also saw a drastic change as if it followed that revolution. This exhibition traces the transition of Peranakan female apparel over about one hundred years. This comprehensive catalogue is for the “Singapore, Sarong Kebaya and Style. Peranakan Fashion in an Interconnected World” exhibition which was organized by the Fukuoka Art Museum, Japan and the Asian Civilizations Museum, Singapore, with Peter Lee, an expert on Peranakan culture as guest curator. The exhibition consists of the collection of Southeast Asian clothes and photographs gifted by the late Mr. and Mrs. Lee Kip Lee in Singapore, who are known as collectors of Asian textiles, the batik collection gifted by the late Mrs. Eiko Adnan Kusuma, a collector of Indonesian textiles.
