Since August 17, 1945, the day on which Indonesia's independence was first declared, seven presidents, six men and one woman, have governed the Republic of Indonesia. One of the benefits of the office, enjoyed by all seven leaders, was the right to use six presidential palaces both as official residences and offices from which they performed their duties.
Naturally, the touch of every one of these presidents is apparent to some extent or another in each of the palaces, which are located in Jakarta, Bogor, Cipanas, Yogyakarta, Bali and Pelabuhan Ratu. Personal flourishes are evident everywhere firstly in how each president used and coordinated space and flow. While this book’s focus will be on painting, it will also discuss architecture, sculpture, interior decoration and landscaping. This large and luxurious book is a discussion of the connection between art and the tastes of the seven presidents, who spent between only a few years and up to thirty-two, as inhabitants of these National Houses. It presents more than 200 of the best works of art among the thousands in the Presidential Palace Collection.
