This publication offers a significant reassessment of the Ursuline Sisters’ role in the early development of female education in Indonesia. First arriving in Batavia in 1856, the Ursulines established the first boarding school for girls and became the first female educators in the country. Drawing from newly discovered archival material—particularly Dutch and French sources housed at the Sint Agatha Archives Center in the Netherlands—this revised edition of the 2016 160 Years Book provides a richer, more comprehensive account of their educational mission and historical legacy.

165 Tahun Ursulin Santa Maria Jakarta is grounded in the Chronicle of the Noordwijk–Juanda Convent 1856–1986, translated by Sister Romana Haberhausen, OSU. The volume retains its original chapter structure but expands the discussion to reflect deeper historical analysis and broader context. The book’s theme—“Onward and fighting to the end”, taken from the Rule of St. Angela—captures the spirit of perseverance that has characterized the Congregation’s presence in Indonesia, including through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Richly illustrated with archival photographs and full-color images, this edition presents a visual and narrative journey through 165 years of the Ursuline legacy—from the pioneering “Transfiguration” community of seven sisters in Batavia to today’s 240+ sisters across 36 communities in Indonesia. It also highlights the architectural and spiritual “living heritage” embodied in 19th-century buildings, the Ursuline Museum, and preserved tombstones that commemorate the earliest members.
